About

I have spent many a fateful hour at Volunteers of America, Utah. After leaving Opportunity Healthcare as an admin, I took a break during the beginning of the pandemic and then wanted to try nonprofit work. I was hired by VOAUT as a Social Media Manager in May 2020 and I worked there through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic until January 2022. I discovered by close collaboration the importance of images and words in fundraising, donation drives, and volunteer asks. Even more powerful is the role of video. For our Silver Spurs gala in the fall of 2020, I went to local businesses and filmed bespoke content for four nights of entertainment including a cocktail and mocktail-making night, a hoedown, and a message from Kathy Bray. To make Silver Spurs a complete experience, I designed, printed, and packaged program materials for the virtual event attendees.

On social media, I called for donations and volunteers while informing the community about issues facing our community. The posts would vary with the seasons. Sometimes the asks were for sunscreen, shorts, and flip flops, sometimes coats, blankets, and sweaters. There was always a need for new underwear, bras, and socks. There were several volunteer opportunities in need of willing hands open regularly. One was at the Youth Resource Center to prepare and serve a meal. Another was sorting donations at the Women’s Resource Center. Sometimes there would be the opportunity to shop for client holiday gifts during our annual Candy Cane Corner fund drive.

Since February 2024, I have returned to VOAUT as a volunteer once a week. My usual gig is serving cookies, main dish, and lemonade to the ladies of the Gerladie E. King Women’s Resource Center. It feels good to have a standard day and time when I volunteer. I have made fast friends with the other regular volunteers and the kitchen staff. The clients and I recognize each other. We compliment each other’s jewelry and hats and catch up on the hot gossip. I am grateful for these opportunities to give back and serve my community.

Below, you will find a mix of the Facebook posts, annual report pages, and newsletter articles I wrote, photographed and designed for VOAUT. I also included some photos from my time volunteering at the Geraldine. If you would like to sign up to volunteer, here is the link.
